The love for Salsa, the dance with Cuban origin is slowly beginning to gain momentum amongst the glitterati, the nouveau riche and aspiring members of the Nigerian society. A unique dance, it seems to have easily differentiated itself from the plethora of dance steps, which come and go with the time. It has been around for years, growing butterfly wings which have quietly, yet beautifully penetrated the dance culture in Nigeria.
In Lagos alone, a few Salsa dance clubs have cropped up and are gaining a team of eager faithful and passionate followers who have discovered the beauty and power of the dance. Take the dance class that holds every forthnight on Sunday at The Prince Of Anthony Hotel. Sponsored by Veleta Fruit Wine, a brand of Intercontinental Distillers Limited, it is well acclaimed to be the biggest and coolest hangout spot for Salsa dancers in Lagos.
Every forthnight sees an influx of Salsa lovers at the hotel to affirm their love for the brand and most especially the dance. Dance is life and they see Salsa Sunday as a place to come to enjoy life at its fullest.
The brand manager of Veleta, Chioma Alonge, speaking on the reason why Veleta Fruit Wine decided to collaborate with Prince of Anthony Hotel on the promotion of Salsa Sunday, she extolled the virtues of Salsa dance citing its sensuality, freedom, celebration and happiness as major points of its unique appeal. All of which are synonymous to the brand essence of Veleta Fruit Wine.
‘We just want to provide a platform where our esteemed customers can learn and dance Salsa in a conducive, friendly and exciting environment. This is one of the ways the brand Veleta Fruit Wine is giving back to the society’
At one of the editions of Salsa Sunday during which Chico Ejiro, a well-known film producer, had come to enjoy Salsa with other dancers, he asserted the relevance and growing power of Salsa in Nigeria. He noted that ‘Salsa has grown into a powerful entertainment factor in the Nigerian society’, a concept in a world of its own, we in Nollywood are looking forward to making dance movies, using the Salsa dance.’
One of the instructors at Dance Office, Micheal, threw light on the growing love for the dance: ‘People dance Salsa for many reasons. Sometimes, they are attracted to the sensuality of the dance, once you have learnt a few step, doors to a new mode of expression is wide open to you. Some others because they want to lose weight and to yet others its because they want to meet and socialise with the upper class of people who love this dance.’
