Ebonyi State Malaria Control Programme Manager, Mr. Lawrence Nwankwo, Wednesday said about $3 billion (N480 billion) was being spent annually in the treatment and prevention of malaria in Nigeria.
The amount, he said, could pay the annual salary of 2.2 million Nigerians on minimum wage.
Nwankwo disclosed this during an advocacy kit dissemination meeting organised by the United States Action for International Development (USAID) Malaria Action Programme for States (MAPS) Wednesday in Abakaliki.
He noted that malaria accounted for about six out of 10 admissions in health facilities, while it was a major cause of absenteeism in schools, offices, markets, which affects the national economy.
Nwankwo stressed that malaria causes death every two minutes in Nigeria.
